LeonoraLeonora is situated 832 kilometres inland from Perth in the north eastern Western Australian goldfields. The shire has a population of 4190, covers an area of 31 743 square kilometres, has 1586 kilometres of road network and has approximately 700 dwellings. The town consists of some 350 houses, 100 industrial sites, three mining type accommodation camps, a shady caravan park, two hotels with a-la-carte dining and one motel. Shopping facilities include a supermarket, butchers, newsagent/liquor/hardware and general store, post office, two roadhouses/service stations (including restaurants), nursery/garden centre, furniture/nicknacks store, cafe, accountant and TAB. Leonora's gold mining history has seen it retain a number of historically significant buildings, including the first State Hotel in the nearby ghost town of Gwalia. In 1995, a series of abandoned miners camps were in derelict condition were auctioned off by the Leonora Tourist Committee. The highest price was $1,000 and the lowest $20. The volunteers that 'bought' the camps were given titles authorising them to restore the camps under guidelines, using as much of the original materials and colour schemes as possible, at their own cost. Hessian and information sheets were provided. The response was terrific with the involvement of over 100 people from ages ranging from 8 to 72 years old. The result is each of the cottages has its own definite personality, some so historically accurate it's as if the residents had only just left for the day. The town has a resident doctor, modern hospital and is serviced by a volunteer St John's Ambulance service. Modern schooling is available in Leonora from pre-school right through to Junior High School. |
